Cycling Through Morocco’s Spectacular Todra Gorge 🌴🚴‍♂️

⛰️ MOROCCO BY BIKE: From Tinghir to Todra Gorge 🚴‍♂️ | Cycling Adventure Through an Oasis, Berber Villages & 300m Cliffs

Welcome to another episode of my Moroccan cycling journey! Today, I’m riding one of the most iconic and awe-inspiring routes in the south of Morocco — from the oasis town of Tinghir to the jaw-dropping Todra Gorge and back.

To beat the brutal desert heat (with highs forecasted around 40°C), I set off at 7am, pedaling out of Tinghir just as the sun lit up the landscape. My early start paid off, giving me a peaceful and shaded ride along the Todra River — a lifeline that has shaped this valley for centuries.

🌴 Tinghir to Todra Gorge: A Ride Through Time As I cycled north, I passed through a vast palm oasis that stretches along the riverbanks — a lush contrast to the arid mountains that rise in every direction. This green ribbon has supported Berber communities for hundreds of years, allowing them to grow crops using traditional irrigation systems called khettaras. Scattered along the road are the remains of old Berber villages, with crumbling adobe houses made from clay, straw, and water. It’s amazing how these sun-dried bricks — made by hand centuries ago — are still standing in many places.

🗻 Panoramic Views & Desert Humor Just outside of town, I climbed a short hill to the Tinghir Oasis Panorama Point, where I got an amazing view of the palm groves, the Jbel Saghro mountains to the south, and the towering High Atlas peaks ahead. Oh, and I passed a camel crossing sign… which made me laugh — only in Morocco!

🐪 Village Life, Donkeys & Desert Hospitality Back on the road, I rolled through traditional villages like Ait Snan and Ait Oussalem, where locals were already starting their day. Donkeys trotted along beside me, women tended crops, and men gathered under shade trees chatting before the sun got intense. The road winds close to the river and oasis, with many small guesthouses and hotels lining the route — it’s a popular destination for hikers and rock climbers, and you can feel the blend of tourism and tradition as you ride through.

🧱 Signs of Culture: “God, Homeland, King” Just before entering the gorge, I crossed the Todra River one last time and noticed a message on the hillside: Arabic writing made from white stones, reading “God, Homeland, King” — Morocco’s national motto. These little details remind you that every ride here is more than just a ride — it’s a window into history, identity, and pride.

🌄 The Main Event: Todra Gorge Suddenly, the towering red cliffs of Todra Gorge come into view. At first glance, it looks like the road ends at a giant wall of rock. But then you spot the narrow gap — just 10 meters wide in places — where the river has carved a dramatic path through the stone over millions of years. Inside the gorge, the cliffs rise up to 300 meters, and even in the height of summer, the river still flows strong. Early in the morning, I had the place nearly to myself, except for a few dogs (who ran beside me for a while!) and some locals setting up stalls with drinks, rugs, and handmade crafts. People come here to cool off, relax, and even sleep on the riverbanks when it’s too hot to be indoors. It’s an epic spot for climbers, hikers, photographers, or just those looking to escape the sun.

🐕 Selfies with Donkeys & Tea with a View After a quick dip in the water and a selfie with some friendly donkeys (I couldn’t resist), I cycled a bit farther north, beyond the gorge, enjoying the peaceful views before turning back. On the return ride, gravity helped me out, and I cruised downhill to a small café near the gorge entrance. Nothing better than a glass of Moroccan mint tea after a big ride in the sun.

❤️ Why You Should Do This Ride This route is one of my all-time favorites in Morocco. It combines stunning landscapes, rich history, traditional Berber culture, and dramatic natural features — all within a relatively short ride. Whether you’re cycling, driving, hiking, or just visiting the area, the Todra Gorge is a must-see destination. And the best part? Every person I met along the way — whether they were local families, guesthouse owners, or curious kids waving from the roadside — was friendly, welcoming, and full of smiles. Although I might have surprised a few people in tight cycling shorts 😅
